“You are Never too small to be BIG.
But are you ready to lead?”
By May Wong, ACB ALB
The above question rather than answer was the take home message from Manoj Vasudevan, leadership coach and author for the book ‘Mastering Leadership the Mousetrap Way’ that wrapped up the final workshop at the District 102 Semi Annual Conference held on 12-13 November 2016, in Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City.
One has to always be prepared to take on opportunity to be a Leader, but to be ever-ready, we have to think and act like a Leader according to the speaker, Manoj. He shared with us some of the important criteria of what it takes to be one.
1. Take ownership and initiative at work. As a Leader, you have to give excellence, not excuse. Do step up for new projects and be accountable for the good as well as bad outcomes, as they help build your competence and confidence.
- Generating ideas alone is not enough. A Leader must infuse ideas by applying some of the infusion points such as pleasure, profit, power, productivity, prestige and especially, A powerful purpose empowers people to be engaged and achieve excellence together.
3. Exert influence through trust, not authority. Are you telling, yelling or selling to get the idea across or getting work done? It is necessary for a Leader to build trust in order to lead others into doing something at will, not by force.
4. Embrace diversity by working with people different from yourself in order to increase your edge. Get to know people of different backgrounds and personalities as diversity allows a Leader to understand everyone from their perspectives.
To sum up, if you aren’t a Leader yet, try look at what you want to be in 5 or 10 years and then learn how to get there; by adopting above criteria for instance. If you already are a Leader, keep sharpening your knowledge and competency because Marshall Goldsmith once said, “What got you here, won’t get you there.” It needs great leader like you to create more great leaders.
Now, are you ready to lead?
